Brooklyn Center parish notifies parishioners of potential COVID-19 case; test returns negative

St. Alphonsus in Brooklyn Center informed parishioners May 15 that tests for a potential case of COVID-19 among its clergy came back negative. The parish office was to remain closed through the weekend.

The parish notified parishioners May 11 about the potential COVID-19 case, posting on its website and Facebook page that the parish office would be closed until further notice.

“All confessions and communion appointments remain canceled until further notice,” and updates will be provided online, the May 11 posting said.

Redemptorist Father John Schmidt, pastor of St. Alphonsus, told The Catholic Spirit May 12 that one of the six Redemptorist priests serving at the parish, Father Quy Duong, wasn’t feeling well May 9. After talking with Father Schmidt, he sought medical care. He had a headache, body aches and his forehead felt warm, though he did not register a fever. He began to feel better the next day.

But as he awaited test results, Father Duong isolated himself at the rectory, with food delivered to him, Father Schmidt said.

He continued to participate in meetings using Zoom video conferencing.

If parishioners have questions, they can send a message to Father Schmidt on the parish website.

The Catholic Spirit updated this story with the negative test results May 15.
