Only Jesus

I recently spoke to a former colleague of mine who has been assigned to an exciting ministry halfway around the globe. “It sounds like you’re doing great,” I said. “Too bad you’re so far from your family.” With the wisdom and insight that explains why I’ve considered him such a good friend for decades, he quickly responded: “Whenever we’re working for the Church, we’re never really away from family.”

Recientemente hablé con un ex colega mío que ha sido asignado a un ministerio emocionante en la mitad del mundo. “Parece que lo estás haciendo muy bien”, le dije. “Lástima que estés tan lejos de tu familia”. Oftentimes, there is a Gospel passage that is in my thoughts and prayers long after I have preached on it. Lately, it has been the Gospel about the Canaanite woman whose daughter was “tormented by demons” (Mt 15:21-28).

When St. Teresa of Kolkata received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, as everyone was watching to see what this saintly woman from the slums of India would say about peace, she shocked the world when she said, “The greatest destroyer of peace today is the cry of the innocent, unborn child. For if a mother can murder her own child in her own womb, what is left for you and for me to kill each other?”

Recently, I had the opportunity to participate in one of St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Community’s Tegeder Talks. As explained to me, the Tegeder Talks are held periodically to remember a former pastor of the parish, Father Michael Tegeder, by continuing his “legacy of encouraging adult conversations about vital topics.”

Recientemente, tuve la oportunidad de participar en una de las Charlas Tegeder de la Comunidad Católica St. Frances Cabrini.
