Only Jesus

I’m blessed to be writing this column as the bishops of our province (made up of the dioceses of North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota) begin our annual retreat.

Tengo la suerte de escribir esta columna mientras los obispos de nuestra provincia (compuesta por las diócesis de Dakota del Norte, Dakota del Sur y Minnesota) comienzan nuestro retiro anual. It has been said that we have never been so divided. Not as a nation, not as a world, not even as a Church. It has been said that we have never been so polarized, so angry, so against someone or something. History would dispute the claim that we are the worst in history. We have been divided, polarized, angry and against someone or something since the beginning when Cain killed his brother Abel. Unfortunately, because of original sin, we will always be an imperfect people in an imperfect world.

Se ha dicho que nunca hemos estado tan divididos. Ni como nación, ni como mundo, ni siquiera como Iglesia. Se ha dicho que nunca hemos estado tan polarizados, tan enojados, tan contra alguien o algo. La historia cuestionaría la afirmación de que somos los peores de la historia. Hemos estado divididos, polarizados, enojados y contra alguien o algo desde el principio cuando Caín mató a su hermano Abel. Desafortunadamente, debido al pecado original, siempre seremos un pueblo imperfecto en un mundo imperfecto.

We are approaching the seventh anniversary of the Archdiocesan Catholic Center’s move to the Dayton’s Bluff neighborhood of St. Paul. Nonetheless, East Siders will often still ask me how I like having our “new offices” on their side of town. There are lots of points in its favor (the best pupusas in the Twin Cities and proximity to the shops at the Hmong Village), but it is the rich history of the neighborhood that makes me most grateful to be here.

Advent is fundamentally a season of hope, which means that it is also a season of waiting. Waiting and hoping are inseparable, which other languages express more clearly. Spanish, for example, has only one word — “esperar” — for our two English words “wait” and “hope.” Similarly, the Hebrew word “yachal” is translated as both “wait” and “hope” in the Bible.

El Adviento es fundamentalmente un tiempo de esperanza, lo que significa que también es un tiempo de espera. Esperar “hope” y esperar “waiting” son inseparables, algo que otros idiomas expresan más claramente. El español, por ejemplo, tiene sólo una palabra, “esperar”, para nuestras dos palabras en inglés, “wait” y "hope." Este es también el caso de la palabra equivalente en hebreo.
