Only Jesus

I was on my annual visit to the Mall of Everything. I was not in collar and wore a Wild jersey and an old hat. The various stores were filled with people of every style of clothing.

I remember the first time I visited Bethlehem. I got out of the taxi into a noisy, dusty, dirty city square guarded by Israeli soldiers — not exactly the scene I pictured in my head as a child singing “O Little Town of Bethlehem.” Upon entering the Basilica of the Nativity, visitors have to bend down to get into the door, which was designed small to keep camels out. It is one of the oldest continually-used churches in Christendom. Built by St. Helena in the fourth century, it frankly looks 1,700 years old. The walls are almost black from the candle soot, and the floor is filthy and worn from millions of pilgrims.

Recuerdo la primera vez que visité Belén. Salí del taxi a una plaza ruidosa, polvorienta y sucia, custodiada por soldados israelíes; no es exactamente la escena que imaginé en mi cabeza cuando era un niño cantaba “Oh, pequeña ciudad de Belén”. Al entrar en la Basílica de la Natividad, los visitantes tienen para agacharse para entrar por la puerta, que fue diseñada para mantener alejados a los camellos. Es una de las iglesias más antiguas en uso en la cristiandad. Construido por Santa Elena en el siglo IV, francamente se ve 1.700 años. Las paredes son casi negras debido al hollín de la vela, y el piso está sucio y desgastado por millones de peregrinos.

On the evening of Nov. 17, I had the privilege of celebrating Mass for the 45th Huether Lasallian Conference, a gathering of Christian Brothers and other educators involved in the global mission of Lasallian education. As a former “brothers’ boy,” I felt right at home. It was wonderful to get updates on Christian Brothers who had taught me (yes, they are indeed really up in years) at South Hills Catholic High School in my hometown of Pittsburgh, and to recall the role that they had played in my education and formation.

En la tarde del 17 de noviembre, tuve el privilegio de celebrar una misa para la 45ª Conferencia Huether LaSallian, una reunión de los Hermanos Cristianos y otros educadores involucrados en la misión global de la educación LaSallian. Como un antiguo “hijo de hermanos”, me sentía como en casa. Fue maravilloso recibir actualizaciones sobre los Hermanos Cristianos que me enseñaron (sí, en realidad están en años) en South Hills Catholic High School en mi ciudad natal de Pittsburgh y recordar el papel que habían desempeñado en mi educación y formación.

Author’s note: Herschell — yes, with two “L’s” — was a character I invented while studying in Jerusalem in 1989. Since then, in those parishes and schools where I have served, Herschell was a familiar fellow who learned his lessons the hard way and still, somehow, through it all, reflected the heart of God.
