The Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis’ Chapter 11 bankruptcy case was formally closed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court Dec. 21, three months after $210 million plan for Reorganization was approved by U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Robert Kressel Sept. 25.
The Diocese of Winona-Rochester will file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy by the end of November to compensate victims/survivors of clergy sexual abuse and to ensure the diocese’s daily operations can continue uninterrupted, Bishop John Quinn said in a Nov. 18 letter included in parish bulletins at weekend Masses.
U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Robert Kressel ruled Dec. 8 that the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis wouldn’t be responsible for paying approximately $355,000 in legal fees incurred by the Unsecured Creditors’ Committee in seeking to consolidate parish, school and foundation assets into the archdiocese’s bankruptcy.
Three months after the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis filed a plan for Reorganization in its bankruptcy proceedings, the committee representing sexual abuse claimants filed its own plan Aug. 22 that seeks approximately $80 million in compensation from the archdiocese.
The Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis should not be compelled to post to its website or request parishes to show a video produced by sexual abuse claimants, a federal bankruptcy judge ruled July 9.

People with sexual abuse claims against the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis should file their claims by August 3 in order to be part of the archdiocese’s Chapter 11 Reorganization settlement, Judge Robert Kressel ruled April 16.
The Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis filed a motion April 1 to require all proofs of claims against it involving child sexual abuse by clergy to be filed by Aug. 3. The proposed deadline is an effort to move quickly toward a plan for Reorganization, said an attorney representing the archdiocese.
