Seeking blue-collar deacons

Seeking blue-collar deacons

The Dec. 5, 2019, Catholic Spirit brought news of the ordination of a new class of permanent deacons, men who with their wives were called to serve us for years to come. When we once again began to ordain permanent deacons in the mid 70s, the men came from a wide array of occupations. They were not just from white-collar professions, but they were milk truck drivers, operating engineers, custodians, and other guys who had calloused hands and got dirt under their fingernails while putting bread on their families’ tables. Could it be that the Lord is no longer calling such men to be ordained?
