Overheard – September 12, 2013

“Leave behind the self-interest that hardens your heart, overcome the indifference that makes your heart insensitive towards others, conquer your deadly reasoning, and open yourself to dialogue and reconciliation.”

– Pope Francis during a prayer vigil for peace in Syria Sept. 7 attended by an estimated 100,000 people in St. Peter’s Square.

“To receive the Lord Jesus means to open my heart with generous love. Anyone, young or old, who meets Jesus is inevitably destined to change and to be led to the service of others.”

 – Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio of the Archdiocese for the Military Services in his homily at the Mass for sainthood candidate Father Vincent Capodanno, who was killed in 1967 in Vietnam as he went to help a wounded soldier only yards from an enemy machine gun.
