St. John’s University to seek new president

Benedictine Father Bob Koopmann announced in a May 25 letter his intention to leave St. John’s University in Collegeville after completing his three-year appointment at the end of the 2011-2012 academic year.

The announcement was sent to the campus communities of SJU and the College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph.

“Serving as president has been a fulfilling and exhilarating experience,” he wrote. However, he added, the stress of the position is significant. “Although I am in good health now, I know I need to restore a better balance in my life. By focusing on the year ahead and the transition to a new leader, I am able to begin that process now.”

During the past two years, Father Koopmann oversaw development of the university’s Strategic Directions 2015 plan, which includes institutional goals, strategies and benchmarks. The school also worked to enhance enrollment, balance the budget and raise funds for the Annual Fund, Learning Commons and student scholarships.

The announcement was made to provide time to search for a new president and a smooth transition, he said.
