Rediscover: Speakers Series set; four new locations

Rediscover-TMDue to popular demand, the 2013 Rediscover: Speakers Series will be repeated this fall at four new locations.

Each of the four 90-minute multimedia talks in the series features a speaker addressing ideas central to the Catholic faith and how they can lead to deeper, more meaningful connections in our lives.

The series of four talks will be held on Mondays at Holy Name of Jesus in Wayzata, Tuesdays at Epiphany in Coon Rapids, Wednesdays at the University of St. Thomas and Thursdays at Pax Christi in Eden Prairie.

All the presentations, which begin at 7 p.m., are free; no registration is necessary.

New opportunities

The presentations drew 12,000 people earlier this year — many of the talks had standing room only. The new sites will give more people an opportunity to attend.

“The locations for the talks in late winter were largely skewed eastward within the archdiocese. We wanted to give folks on the west side of our 12-county area an opportunity to attend something a little closer to home,” said Sarah Mealey, director of communications for the archdiocese.

In addition to the three churches hosting talks this fall, the University of St. Thomas was selected as a site to reach out more directly to young adults.

“We are excited about the partnerships we have been forming with the campus ministry organizations

at the University of St. Thomas, St. Kate’s and the University of Minnesota, as well as with St. Paul’s Outreach, a wonderful Catholic ministry on the UST and University of Minnesota campuses,” Mealey said. “We definitely want to make special efforts to connect youth and young adults, especially college students, to the resources of Rediscover:.”

“One of the tools we think they will really appreciate and use is our Rediscover: mobile app, which includes Mass, confession and eucharistic adoration times in our ‘Find’ feature for all three of the campuses with whom we are partnering in our outreach efforts,” she said.

Presentation topics

The schedule of talks includes:

  • Father Peter Laird on “Rediscover: meaning — Finding God’s Purpose for My Life,” addressing “big questions,” such as: Who is God? What is God’s purpose and plan for my life?
  • Father Michael Keating on “Rediscover: belonging — Living in Communion with God,” focusing on how personal sin weakens our relationship with God and how living the life we are called to through our baptism unites us with God and our family of faith.
  • Father Andrew Cozzens on “Rediscover: strength — Overcoming Life’s Challenges through God’s Grace,” exploring how the sacraments put us in real contact with the living Lord, who gives the strength and power to overcome the challenges of life.
  • Deacon Joseph Michalak on “Rediscover: The Way — Keeping God at the Center of My Life,” addressing what it means to live out a Christian life in the Church and keep God at the center of our lives. It is an exploration of how prayer, service to others and acceptance of God’s gift of the sacraments lead to true and lasting happiness in this life and the next.

“We’re asking the thousands of people who attended the talks earlier this year to encourage friends, family, neighbors and co-workers to attend the talks this fall,” said Mealey, who encourages people who previously attended the presentations to “consider attending again and inviting two or three people to join them.”
