Russell Connors was a prolific author and theology professor

Russell Connors, a prolific author and theology professor at St. Catherine University in St. Paul, died July 5.

Connors joined the St. Catherine faculty in 1995 and served as chair of the theology department from 2000 to 2010.

Sister Andrea J. Lee, IHM, university president, said on the school’s website http://news.stkate.edu that Connors was a revered teacher and scholar who was loved by his students and colleagues.

“He is also a loving husband and father and a treasured member of the St. Catherine community,” she said. “We will miss him dearly.”

During his 2011 Sister Anne Joachim Moore lecture in January, Connor spoke about his fight with cancer, which also was reported in SCAN magazine in February.

New Theology Review recently published his “Short Stories and the Christian Imagination” and, in June, the Theological Studies journal published “The Grace of Indirection and the Moral Imagination,” a study of the possible impact of the arts on moral and spiritual formation.

He also wrote a book, “In the Breath of God: Christian Morality,” published by Loyola Press in 2000, and collaborated with Patrick T. McCormick of Gonzaga University on “Facing the Issues: Dimensions of Character, Choices and Community and Character” and “Choices and Community: The Three Faces of Christian Morality,” published by Paulist Press in 2002 and 1998, respectively.

Connors, a member of the Catholic Theological Society of America and the Society of Christian Ethics, was honored in 2001 with the University’s Denny Prize for Excellence in Writing for “Catholic Social Teaching – Convictions and Connections,” which was published in The Global Search for Justice, the textbook for the St. Kate’s senior liberal arts capstone course.

His wife, Patricia Cahalan Connors, is chair of St. Catherine’s music and theater department. They have two children, Elizabeth and Patrick.

A funeral Mass was celebrated July 9 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in St. Paul.
