Depositions of Father Laird, Archbishop Flynn posted on archdiocese’s website

Updated June 5, 2014

The deposition that Father Peter Laird gave May 12 as part of a civil lawsuit in a case of alleged clergy sexual abuse has been posted on the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis’ website. The archdiocese has also posted the deposition that Archbishop Harry Flynn gave May 14 as part of the same lawsuit.

These depositions were offered “as part of our renewed commitment to transparency and disclosure,” the archdiocese states on its website. In each deposition, one section is not posted because it is under seal by the court.

Father Laird served as vicar general and moderator of the curia for the archdiocese from late 2009 to late 2013. Archbishop Flynn served as archbishop for the archdiocese from September 8, 1995 to May 2, 2008.

The depositions in St. Paul were conducted by attorneys for a plaintiff known as “John Doe 1.” The plaintiff alleges that a former priest of the Diocese of Winona, Thomas Adamson, who had assignments in the archdiocese, sexually abused him in 1976 or 1977 when he was a minor.
