In a big rout, DeLaSalle High School added to its historic Minnesota state boys basketball championship run March 25.

Led by senior forward Goanar Mar’s 28 points, the Islanders cruised by Austin High School 72-44 for the Class AAA state championship at the Target Center in Minneapolis. It marked the six-consecutive state title for the Minneapolis Catholic school and its 10th overall.

“We have this great tradition and culture at our school, and they embrace that in a way that’s outstanding,” Islanders head coach Dave Thorson said of the team.

DeLaSalle (27-3) simply added to the tradition in convincing fashion with a 33-16 run in the second half to close out Austin (29-3). The Packers stuck around in the first half and trailed 31-23 at the break.

“It was just a consistent defensive pressure,” Thorson said.

Mar and Gabe Kalscheur each had three steals while the Packers committed 19 turnovers. Kalscheur, a junior guard, also stepped on offense with 20 points.
