The 8th Street Boulevard Gardens at St. Olaf in Minneapolis won an award for best adopted garden in the Minneapolis Downtown Improvement District 2024 Greening and Public Realm Awards.

Deacon Shallbetter ministered in parishes, prisons

Deacon Clarence Shallbetter, who was ordained in 2001 and served at St. Olaf and Sts. Cyril and Methodius, both in Minneapolis, as well as in prison ministry, died Nov. 9. He was 86.

As attendees waited quietly just before 7 a.m. Mass in the chapel at St. Olaf in downtown Minneapolis, Archbishop Bernard Hebda walked to the podium and announced that Father Kevin Kenney had been selected by Pope Francis to be an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis.

St. Olaf in downtown Minneapolis purchased the Exodus Residence in the early 1990s, and in partnership with Catholic Charities, provided “supportive housing” for more than 25 years, said Michael Griffin, the parish’s director of social ministry. “But in the last couple of years, it was recognized that the building had seen some better days, and was in need of some TLC on both a grand and a small scale,” he said.
