I write these words from Milan, Italy, where I am with my Word on Fire team filming new episodes for our Pivotal Players series. I’ve seen lots of marvelous things on this trip, including the ruins of the ancient baptistery under the Milan Cathedral where, in the spring of 387, St. Augustine was baptized by St. Ambrose. But the most fascinating sight I’ve taken in is the vested and mitered skeleton of that same Ambrose, which rests in the basilica that bears his name, not far from the Cathedral.

Restaurateur Tony Andersen was preparing to do the legal paperwork to open a bar and bakery in Merriam Park, but was struggling to find a name. He found himself up late with insomnia, the TV on in the background. The show’s topic turned to patron saints in the Catholic Church, and it mentioned St. Augustine of Hippo, describing him as a patron saint of brewers. Andersen’s ears perked up.

I have never paid much attention to the saints, but that all changed one summer about 10 years ago. It was the summer that my oldest daughter was going off to college for the first time. Her move-in day was scheduled for Aug. 27. It should have been an exciting and fun day for all of us, except for one thing: My son was to appear in juvenile court that same morning due to his impulsive adolescent behavior.
