In the trilogy, it is Frodo Baggins, the little hobbit, who embarks on a perilous adventure to destroy the ring of power at Mount Doom and save Middle Earth from the power of the evil Sauron.

The necromancer Sauron, the archvillain of “The Lord of the Rings,” makes a cameo appearance in director Dome Karukoski’s “Tolkien.” He looms over the Battle of the Somme in World War I as if he were at home in his realm of Mordor and the bloody conflict had all been his idea.
