We are already nearly three months into the Year of Consecrated Life, declared by Pope Francis as a special time of prayer and reflection on the vocation and dignity of consecrated religious.

During this “year” — which began with Advent and will run 14 months — Pope Francis has extended the spiritual graces of a plenary indulgence to all members of the institutes of religious life and all “other truly repentant faithful moved by a spirit of charity.”

I feel very blessed to have been taught by the Adrian Dominican Sisters in the elementary and high schools of my home parish. Those were very formative years, and I had the wonderful, inspirational examples of virtue that those religious women embodied. I have often remarked that the Sisters taught me “how to think and how to think with the Church.” Much of my vocation as a priest was also due to the regular encouragement the Sisters gave me. They were marvelous teachers, and their contribution to the Church cannot be overstated.

This Archdiocese has been very blessed with the number of priestly vocations we have had of late. Last year, I was privileged to ordain 10 new priests; this year, six new priests and, God willing, seven new priests for next year. I do not know how many dioceses or archdioceses can make such a boast! We also begin this academic year with 62 seminarians studying for the Archdiocese, 12 of whom are entering first-year college! God has truly been good to us!
