With the high school hockey season in full swing, Mike Jeremiah has been following his routine of walking into the locker room carrying his Bible as he prepares to talk to the boys varsity hockey team at Benilde-St. Margaret’s School in St. Louis Park in his role as team chaplain.
A graduate of Benilde-St. Margaret’s who is a lawyer and theology teacher has been appointed president of the high school in St. Louis Park. Danielle Palkert Hermanny will take her new post May 15.
Two Catholic schools in St. Louis Park, one in Maplewood and one in Stillwater were listed by the Minnesota Department of Health Oct. 7 as having five or more COVID-19 infections among students and staff.
Highland Park Catholic School kindergarten teacher Molly Stucker found a student’s comment surprising but telling as she drew blinds on the east facing windows of her classroom.
“Meeting an astronaut alone is incredible,” said Amelia Backes, a junior. “But, talking to an astronaut while they are currently on the ISS orbiting the earth is just so surreal. [That] is definitely the best word for it.”

The Catholic Spirit is highlighting three students who credit their Catholic education with providing opportunities to help them learn about the world, serve others and grow in their faith.
Carlos McMerty-Brummer’s memories of his native Honduras are vivid. He remembers the five houses that made up the orphanage he entered as a baby in 1998 and the presence of two American missionaries who would alter the course of his life.
Mark Hutchinson, an ultrasound technician who volunteers at Robbinsdale Women’s Center, told the students that the baby already yawns, gets hiccups and dispenses waste. He also explained how the baby receives nutrients through the umbilical cord. “They [also] like to hold on to it [umbilical cord] because it pulsates and rocks them to sleep,” he said.
Academy of Holy Angels, Cretin-Derham Hall and Holy Family each went 2-0 in the Thanksgiving girls basketball tournament at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul Nov. 25-26. An estimated 1,400 fans attended the tourney hosted by the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis Office of Stewardship and Development. Twelve Catholic high school varsity teams and the schools’ junior varsity and/or ‘B’ squads participated in the hoops showcase.
Benilde-St. Margaret's, based in St. Louis Park, lost its star senior running back Ricky Floyd in the first quarter of the Class 4A state high school football championship Nov. 25 at US Bank Stadium. Floyd rushed for 1,827 yards and 26 touchdowns this season.
