The Catholic Spirit won 12 Catholic Press Association newspaper awards at the annual Catholic Media Conference June 21 in St. Petersburg, Florida. Three first-place awards are among the honors captured by the newspaper of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis.
The list is as follows:
- Photographer of the Year — Third place: Dave Hrbacek
- Best Feature Writing – Non-Weekly Diocesan Newspaper, Circulation 25,000 or more — Second place: The Power of Praise by Dave Hrbacek
- Best Headline — Honorable mention: The ‘Brew’ Evangelization
- Explanation of Marriage — Third place: Humanae Vitae by Maria Wiering
- Best Reporting on a Special Age-group – Young adults (18-40) — First place: Millennial finds freedom in the faith by Jonathan Liedl
- Best Reporting on a Special Age-Group – Children and Teens Younger than 18 — Third place: From Myanmar to St. Jerome by Dave Hrbacek
- Best Reporting of Social Justice Issues – Care for God’s Creation — Third place: Catholic Cemeteries to offer ‘natural burial’ by Maria Wiering
- Best Reporting of Social Justice Issues – Solidarity — First place: Welcoming the stranger by Jessica Trygstad
- Best Reporting on Vocations to Priesthood, Religious Life or Diaconate – Non-Weekly Diocesan Newspaper, Circulation 25,001 or More — Honorable mention: Ordination
