Hill-Murray won its fourth state boys hockey title with a 4-1 win over Eden Prairie March 7 in the Class 2A finals at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. The Pioneers, who finished 22-6-3, were led by senior Charlie Strobel, who scored two goals in the game and also got the game-winner the day before in a 3-2 win over St. Thomas Academy. Charlie’s father, Mike, and Mike’s twin brother, Mark, played on Hill-Murray’s 1991 state championship team, with Mike — like his son — getting two goals in the finals, a 5-3 win against Duluth East. The Pioneers also won state titles in 1983 and 2008. Head Coach Bill Lechner was behind the bench for the 2008 title, and first joined the coaching staff in 1980. He retired from his job as athletic director, but has chosen to continue coaching the varsity boys hockey team.
