Basilica offers noon Mass for Notre Dame Cathedral community and Paris

The Basilica of St. Mary dedicated its noon Mass April 16 to prayerful support of the community of fire-damaged Notre Dame Cathedral and the city of Paris.

“During this Holy Week, Catholics around the world are saddened” by the damage done to the “iconic cathedral,” officials at the parish in Minneapolis said in a statement.

About 125 people attended the Mass, celebrated by retired Father Harry Tasto. After the Mass, the Basilica’s director of liturgy and the sacred arts, Johan van Parys, led a rosary.

A book placed on the Altar of the Sacred Heart in the Basilica can be signed by people who wish to express their support for the people of Paris. It will be at the altar through Easter Sunday and then sent to the archbishop of Paris.

Rather than one simple ring of a bell at the Basilica at noon, the bell was tolled for two minutes in honor of Notre Dame Cathedral, followed by a full ringing of all the bells. The bells at the Cathedral of St. Paul in St. Paul will be rung for five minutes at 6:16 p.m. April 16.

Officials in Paris have vowed to rebuild the cathedral after an April 15 fire destroyed its roof and steeple and caused other damage.
