Registration is open now for one of the most forward-looking days you’ll ever spend learning about the latest and best ways to share information and the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
John Allen Jr., Lisa Hendey, Matthew Warner, Lino Rulli, Paul Henderson and Lou Carbone are all on the docket for presentations aimed to bring you up to date on the ways technology can and should be a tool you know how to use well.
A team from The Catholic Spirit, the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis and the Coalition of Ministry Associations in the archdiocese has developed the agenda for “Ever Ancient, Ever New” – Archdiocesan Communications Day set for Thursday, Oct. 13, at Pax Christi Church in Eden Prairie.
“More and more, we live online,” pointed out committee member Paul Krenzelok, director of faith formation and evangelization at Holy Name parish in Minneapolis. “If we are to touch people where they live, we must be a vital and dynamic presence on the Internet.”

Panel of experts to keynote
The program will begin with Mass at8 a.m. Archbishop John Nienstedt will introduce the topic of the day from his perspective, and then a video will pull together the theological and pastoral perspectives of communicating the message of Christ and his church.
In the keynote session of the day, a panel of experts will address the question, “What challenges currently face the church in the area of Communications – and what solutions do you propose?”
- John Allen Jr., senior National Catholic Reporter correspondent and author who is frequently seen on CNN addressing Catholic issues, will answer the question from a global perspective.
- Paul Henderson, marketing and communications expert on the staff of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Communications Department, will take on the view from the USCCB and national perspective.
- Sirius Radio host Lino Rulli will speak to the issue from the perspective of the under-40 age group.
A question and answer session with the panelists will follow.
Drilling down to the practical
Following lunch, nationally recognized new media experts Hendey and Warner will present a plenary session on “The Essentials,” practical ways Catholics can take advantage of social and digital media, and afterward will lead a panel of local new media adherents to drill down even further to get at best practices now in use in this still-new and ever-changing technology.
Hendey is the founder of CatholicMom.com, and Warner is the founder of flockNote.com, TweetCatholic.com and is a National Catholic Register blogger.
Finally, maybe you can’t take the plunge into social media right away, but Twin Cities businessman Carbone will get down to the nitty-gritty by presenting five things you can do to improve your communication skills. The program will close by4 p. m.
Planning committee member Casey Warren, a parish nurse, thought the day would be helpful for anyone who directs parish ministry.
“Parish leaders should attend Communication Day to learn the importance of communicating their invaluable message,” Warren noted, “and to learn ways to communicate this message to the rest of the church, namely, their staff, their parishioners and beyond.”
