The Catholic Spirit won 10 Catholic Press Association awards June 23, including first place for a special supplement on a bishop’s transition. Catholic Spirit staff photographer Dave Hrbacek won second place for photographer of the year.

Judges called “Our Shepherd: Installation of Archbishop Bernard Hebda,” a special magazine-style issue The Catholic Spirit published in May 2016, “a great resource.”

A judge wrote, “I loved the varying sources to talk about who the man is and how he will affect the Church moving forward. We got a lot more out of this issue than a rehashing of events.”

On Hrbacek’s photos, judges noted “visually engaging images. A keen eye. A versatile body of work.”

“People’s expressions make the story in these images,” they wrote. “From the bishop to the governor, to the tearful teacher, these images pull the viewer’s interest into the story.”

Other awards included:

  • First place for best feature writing to Hrbacek for the feature “Grave-digging deacon”
  • First place for stories on the poor and vulnerable to freelance writer Bridget Ryder for “Doughnuts for Jesus”
  • Second place on the best explanation of the Church’s position on marriage to Hrbacek, Catholic Spirit editor Maria Wiering and Bishop Andrew Cozzens
  • Second place on coverage of senior citizens to Hrbacek and freelance writers Susan Klemond and Jessica Weinberger
  • Third place for a Year of Mercy-related photo to Hrbacek
  • Third place for coverage on violence in communities to Wiering, assistant editor Jessica Trygstad, staff writer Matthew Davis and now-retired writer Bob Zyskowski
  • Honorable mention on best coverage of local politics to Ryder and Wiering
  • Honorable mention on coverage of life and dignity of the human person to Hrbacek for “Inside the heart of God.”

The annual Catholic Press Association awards were presented at the Catholic Media Conference, held June 20-23 this year in Quebec City.
