Archdiocese, Ramsey County reach settlement on civil petition

The Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis announced a settlement Dec. 18 with the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office on a civil petition the county filed against the archdiocese in June.

In an agreement that attorneys for both parties said went beyond the requirements of the law, the archdiocese has agreed to create an “organizational culture” that protects children in an effort to make sure no child is hurt again.

Judge Teresa Warner called it “a significant effort to protect not only children but citizens.”

The county filed the civil petition and criminal charges against the archdiocese June 5 in response to the case of former priest Curtis Wehmeyer, who was convicted in 2013 of sexually abusing three boys at Blessed Sacrament in St. Paul in 2010. A pre-trial hearing on the criminal charges is expected in January.
