Looking for an opportunity in a defensive battle, Academy of Holy Angels senior quarterback Joseph Heimbold decided to go deep.

It turned into a 46-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Ryan Mazurek and the only points the Richfield Catholic high school needed in a 14-0 victory over Cloquet High School (13-1) Nov. 24. The Stars (13-1) won their first-ever Class 4A Prep Bowl football championship with the victory.

Cloquet threatened immediately after the first quarter TD, but Holy Angels senior defensive back Keontay Shorter made a leaping interception in the end zone to end the Lumberjacks drive. The Lumberjacks moved the ball often with 263 yards of offense, but the Stars took advantage of a couple turnovers and stops on fourth down.

Holy Angels got some breathing room late in the third quarter when junior running back Thomas Shelstad scored on a 1-yard TD following a Cloquet fumble. He led all Stars rushers with 87 yards on 14 carries.

Heimbold had 70 yards rushing, and he threw for 106 yards. He also overcame three interceptions by the Lumberjacks.

Holy Angels made its third Prep Bowl appearance having previously lost in 2013 and 2005.
