They were there along with community members to call for a humane response to Central American refugee children and families seeking safety in the U.S. Archbishop Nienstedt was one of the featured speakers at the event. Another was Asad Zaman, left, of the Muslim American Society of Minnesota. To the right of Archbishop Nienstedt is Estela Villagran Manancero, director of Latino Ministry for the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis. Also present were the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in St. Paul. Sister Susan Hames was one of the speakers. The vigil was hosted by the Interfaith Coalition on Immigration, which hosts monthly vigils at the detention center. Participants at the vigil hold up interfaith prayer flags to express that the issue concerns all world religions. Now 18 years old and preparing to go to college this fall, she came to the U.S. from Mexico with her family when she was 3. At left is Ana Vasquez from Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Committee, along with Kathryn Sharpe, third from left, a volunteer with the Interfaith Coalition on Immigration, who served as emcee. Daniel Deltoro of Assumption in Richfield attends the vigil with his daughter Miranda. He was one of the speakers, and he came to the U.S. from Mexico when he was 12.
