Father Joncas honored with national award

The National Federation of Priests’ Councils has awrded its 2014 Touchstone Award to Father Jan Michael Joncas.

Father Joncas has been a member of the faculty at the University of St. Thomas since 1991, teaching classes in liturgy and worship. In 2012 he was named an artist in residence and research fellow in the university’s Center for Catholic Studies.

The Touchstone Award is presented to the priest, who in the view of the president and board of directors of the National Federation of Priests’ Councils, is one whose service in the Gospel of Jesus Christ exemplifies the purpose and goals of the Federation, “his leadership enhances the ministry of others and his words and deeds support the life and ministry of priests; thus he, as it were, is a touchstone for genuine, quality priesthood.”

Father Svobodny celebrates 65th anniversary

Oblate of Mary Immaculate Father Al Svobodny will celebrate the 65th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood June 1 at Christ the King Retreat Center in Buffalo. A prayer service begins at 2 p.m. with an open house to follow. There will be a short program at 3:30 p.m. RSVP to (763) 682-1394.

Father Svobodny was ordained June 4, 1949, at the Cathedral of St. Paul in St. Paul. He has served as the public relations director at Christ the King Retreat Center for the past 20 years. Previously, he served as a teacher in Carthage, Mo., pilgrimage director at the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows in Belleville, Ill., vocation director, worked at Holy Family parish in Duluth and was the editor of OMI Communications for his order’s former central province.

Nominations open for St. John Paul II Champions for Life

The Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis is looking to honor those who work tirelessly for life at its annual St. John Paul II Champions for Life Awards.

Submit a nomination online. The nomination deadline is Aug. 15. Nominees must be a member of a Catholic parish or Catholic affiliated group within the archdiocese. Award Categories include: adult – pro-life professional, adult – volunteer, youth/young adult (individual or group), couple, family or Catholic affiliated group. The awards will be presented at the St. John Paul II Champions for Life Awards Luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 16 at St. Peter in Mendota.
