Only Jesus

Catholic Schools Week 2023 has been a wonderful reminder of the great opportunity — as well as great responsibility — that we have in our archdiocese to teach our Catholic faith to our youngest sisters and brothers. I never cease to be amazed by how eager the young are to learn, and how naturally they embrace Jesus and his teachings when they are given the chance. 

La Semana de las Escuelas Católicas 2023 ha sido un maravilloso recordatorio de la gran oportunidad, así como de la gran responsabilidad, que tenemos en nuestra arquidiócesis de enseñar nuestra fe católica a nuestros hermanos y hermanas más jóvenes. Nunca dejo de asombrarme de lo ansiosos que están los jóvenes por aprender y de la naturalidad con la que abrazan a Jesús y sus enseñanzas cuando se les da la oportunidad.

In my Catholic grade school, I was the kid who was going to be a priest. I rarely got in trouble and if I did, it was for talking in class. One day when I was in the sixth grade, my mother came home from a parent-teacher conference and immediately went into the kitchen. She began opening and closing all the cupboards all the while crying out, “Oh Charles, oh Charles, where are you?”

En mi escuela primaria católica, yo era el niño que iba a ser sacerdote. Pocas veces me metí en problemas y si los tuve fue por hablar en clase. Un día, cuando estaba en sexto grado, mi madre llegó a casa de una conferencia de padres y maestros e inmediatamente fue a la cocina. Comenzó a abrir y cerrar todos los armarios mientras gritaba: "Oh Charles, oh Charles, ¿dónde estás?".

I’m writing this week from the Marian Servants of Divine Providence Retreat Center, where I am making my annual retreat. Even in silence, it is a blessing to be with the bishops of Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota and to be guided by Archbishop Alfred Hughes, the archbishop emeritus of New Orleans.  At 90 years old, Archbishop Hughes has a great deal of wisdom to share with us, the fruit of his reflection on his more than six decades of ministry as a parish priest, seminary professor and bishop.

Les escribo esta semana desde el Centro de Retiros Marianas Siervas de la Divina Providencia, donde estoy haciendo mi retiro anual. Incluso en silencio, es una bendición estar con los obispos de Minnesota, Dakota del Norte y Dakota del Sur y ser guiado por el arzobispo Alfred Hughes, arzobispo emérito de Nueva Orleans. A sus 90 años, el arzobispo tiene mucha sabiduría para compartir con nosotros, fruto de su reflexión sobre sus más de seis décadas de ministerio como párroco, profesor de seminario y obispo.

Even though the television was only in black and white, the advertised attaché case was the only Christmas gift that I wanted that year. I already suspected that my parents were not going to let me enter the seminary after eighth grade, and my fallback occupation was to be a secret agent.

Aunque la televisión era solo en blanco y negro, el maletín anunciado era el único regalo de Navidad que quería ese año. Ya sospechaba que mis padres no me iban a dejar entrar al seminario después del octavo grado, y mi ocupación alternativa era ser agente secreto.
