Only Jesus

There is still time. I am reassured that I can still come up with my choice for what to give up for Lent. Otherwise, it is an occupational hazard to be standing in the back of the church on Ash Wednesday, knowing that people will ask me what I gave up for Lent and not having my choice made. 

Todavía hay tiempo. Tengo la seguridad de que todavía puedo elegir a qué renunciar durante la Cuaresma. De lo contrario, es un riesgo ocupacional estar parado en la parte trasera de la iglesia el Miércoles de Ceniza, sabiendo que la gente me preguntará a qué renuncié durante la Cuaresma y sin haber hecho mi elección.

I was blessed recently to be on a pilgrimage with about 40 young Catholics and chaperones from the archdiocese. The destination was the March for Life in Washington, D.C. The U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade about a year and a half ago, but our youth understand that the fight to protect life, especially in Minnesota, is far from over.

Recientemente tuve la suerte de estar en una peregrinación con unos 40 jóvenes católicos y acompañantes de la arquidiócesis. El destino fue la Marcha por la Vida en Washington, D.C. La Corte Suprema de los Estados Unidos anuló Roe v. Wade hace aproximadamente un año y medio, pero nuestros jóvenes entienden que la lucha para proteger la vida, especialmente en Minnesota, está lejos de terminar.

I’m blessed to be writing this column as the bishops of our province (made up of the dioceses of North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota) begin our annual retreat.

Tengo la suerte de escribir esta columna mientras los obispos de nuestra provincia (compuesta por las diócesis de Dakota del Norte, Dakota del Sur y Minnesota) comienzan nuestro retiro anual. It has been said that we have never been so divided. Not as a nation, not as a world, not even as a Church. It has been said that we have never been so polarized, so angry, so against someone or something. History would dispute the claim that we are the worst in history. We have been divided, polarized, angry and against someone or something since the beginning when Cain killed his brother Abel. Unfortunately, because of original sin, we will always be an imperfect people in an imperfect world.

Se ha dicho que nunca hemos estado tan divididos. Ni como nación, ni como mundo, ni siquiera como Iglesia. Se ha dicho que nunca hemos estado tan polarizados, tan enojados, tan contra alguien o algo. La historia cuestionaría la afirmación de que somos los peores de la historia. Hemos estado divididos, polarizados, enojados y contra alguien o algo desde el principio cuando Caín mató a su hermano Abel. Desafortunadamente, debido al pecado original, siempre seremos un pueblo imperfecto en un mundo imperfecto.
