Only Jesus

As I reflect on our recent Synod Assembly, the words that our patron, St. Paul, addressed to the Philippians come to mind: “Every time I think of you, I give thanks to my God” (Phil. 1:3). I have been overwhelmed with a sense of gratitude each time I think of how God has blessed this local Church through the willingness of so many to be part of our Archdiocesan Synod. The liturgies, presentations, discussions and voting were all manifestations for me of the presence of the Holy Spirit and of the rich blessings that God has bestowed upon us.

Al reflexionar sobre nuestra reciente Asamblea sinodal, me vienen a la mente las palabras que nuestro patrón, San Pablo, dirigió a los filipenses: “Cada vez que pienso en vosotros, doy gracias a mi Dios” (Filipenses 1:3). Me siento abrumado por un sentimiento de gratitud cada vez que pienso en cómo Dios ha bendecido a esta Iglesia local a través de la voluntad de tantos de ser parte de nuestro Sínodo Arquidiocesano. Las liturgias, presentaciones, debates y votaciones fueron para mí manifestaciones de la presencia del Espíritu Santo y de las ricas bendiciones que Dios nos ha otorgado.

There is an old story with many variations that is told about a young novice who met with his novice master. The novice was filled with his ideas, insights and opinions. He began to tell the novice master all that he had learned and a list of suggestions for how to make life better.

Hay una vieja historia con muchas variaciones que se cuenta acerca de un joven novicio que se reunió con su maestro de novicios. El novicio se llenó de sus ideas, percepciones y opiniones. Empezó a contarle al maestro de novicios todo lo que había aprendido y una lista de sugerencias sobre cómo mejorar la vida.

It’s hard to believe that the Synod Assembly is finally upon us. I am looking forward to this Pentecost weekend more than I ever remember in the past. With and through your prayers, I am confident that there will be an outpouring of the Holy Spirit on this local Church as approximately 500 delegates from around our archdiocese gather at Cretin-Derham Hall high school for our first Synod in more than 80 years.

Es difícil creer que la Asamblea del Sínodo finalmente está sobre nosotros. Estoy entusiasmado con este fin de semana de Pentecostés más de lo que recuerdo en el pasado; Con y a través de sus oraciones, confío en que habrá un derramamiento del Espíritu Santo sobre esta Iglesia local cuando 500 delegados de toda nuestra Arquidiócesis se reúnan en la Escuela Secundaria Cretin-Derham Hall para nuestro primer Sínodo en más de 80 años.

It has been said that electricity transformed the night into day. Yet all the variations of invented light cannot overcome the darkness of evil and its shadows of sin, suffering and death. All of life’s disappointments and discouragements move like a fog to obscure the joy of life. No matter the historical achievements of the past, the complex enlightenment of the mind does not come from lofty thoughts. They are gifts from the Creator.

Se ha dicho que la electricidad transformó la noche en día. Sin embargo, todas las variaciones de la luz inventada no pueden vencer la oscuridad del mal y sus sombras de pecado, sufrimiento y muerte. Todas las decepciones y desánimos de la vida se mueven como una niebla para oscurecer la alegría de vivir. No importa los logros históricos del pasado, la compleja iluminación de la mente no proviene de pensamientos elevados. Son regalos del Creador.
