Pensaba que demasiado a menudo estas campañas se convertían en un vehículo mediante el cual poderosos intereses manipulaban al americano medio según su conveniencia o que en envío masivo de postales y cartas, originales o copiadas, eran una pérdida de tiempo incluso cuando había una causa por la cual merecía la pena hacerse oír. “¿Qué probabilidades hay de que mi carta sea realmente leída entre las cientos de miles que recibe al año cada congresista? Ya expresaré mi opinión en tiempo de elecciones”, pensaba para mí, al tiempo que no excluía la posibilidad de participar también en algún rally o marcha si sentía la necesidad de hacer ruido sobre algún asunto.

I didn’t used to be fan of sending messages to Congress. I thought too often it was the work of powerful interests manipulating average Americans to their convenience. Or when there was a cause I considered worth speaking up for, I thought massive post card campaigns or even personal, individualized letters were a waste of time. “What were the chances my letter was going to be read among the hundreds of thousands each congressman or woman receives each year? I’ll speak up at the time of elections,” I thought, and perhaps march in a rally or two if I felt the need to make extra noise about some issue.
